into a bedded hospice. “The creation of  a bedded unit will augment the existing Hospice at Home service as well as provide facilities for a wide range of new and expanded services.”

Mary is as determined today as she was all those years’ ago to ensure that people with life-threatening medical conditions continue to be cared for by family and friends supported by qualified medical staff.

“But,” said Mary, “this high standard of hospice care is expensive to maintain.  We rely greatly on the generosity of our supporters, of individuals, companies and trusts.”

Concluding, Mary said: “In a nutshell, the Harlington Hospice could not survive without the kindness of people like you.”

At a recent investiture held at Buckingham Palace, Mary Hopkins was awarded an MBE by HM the Queen.

This well-deserved honour marks the culmination of a life-long involvement serving the county of Middlesex and in particular her inspirational leadership in the founding of the Harlington Hospice Association 21 years ago.

With typical modesty, Mary, who is now a founder trustee of the Harlington Hospice Association, maintains that it is not her who should be honoured but instead it should be all the people who helped realise the dream they had 21 years’ ago.

Now Mary is of an age where she wants to see this dream transformed

MARATHON

£1,500 RAISED

Over £1,500 in sponsorship money was raised for the Harlington Hospice by Joanna Shelvey after successfully competing in the Flora 1/2  marathon fun run.

Joanna had a special reason for her magnificent effort, for her mother is receiving treatment in the Harlington Hospice Lymphoedema Clinic run by Adrian Heppenstall.

Said Joanna: “My mum is really pleased with the service she is getting at the Hospice from Adrian and his team.  It’s been a great help to her so I’m only too pleased to give something back.”

Responding, Adrian Heppenstall said:“We are extremely grateful for Joanna’s marvellous effort when raising much-needed funds. Without them we would not be able to continue providing the vital services needed by people such as Joanna’s mother.”
