Why volunteer?
While it's common knowledge that volunteers do a world of good for charities and the communities they serve, increasingly people are becoming aware that helping out can also bring many benefits for the volunteers themselves.
Did you know, for example, that over 70% of employers would hire a candidate with volunteering experience over someone who has never volunteered? Just a couple of hours a week can really enhance your job prospects, help to plug any gaps in your work experience and give you a range of new skills.
Volunteering also offers participants the chance to have amazing experiences, make friends with people from all walks of life.
Because it exposes people to new situations, people and experiences, volunteering can also help individuals to develop the confidence to try out different things. Knowing that your skills are valued and contributing to your community can be a tremendous confidence boost for volunteers.
There are many different motives that inspire people to volunteer for Harlington Hospice:
- Students - course placement or work experience.
- Between jobs - a couple of months before the new job start date.
- Retirement - making good use of years of expertise
- Special interest/skill - which can make a valuable contribution to the work of the Hospice.
- Spare time - a few hours a week to get involved in something different and rewarding.
Whatever your personal motive is, we would love to hear from you.
What commitment do I have to make?
We have a very flexible approach to your commitment - we want you to be able to donate the time that suits you whilst making the best use of the skills and experience you have.
What volunteer roles are available?
Volunteers at the Hospice are engaged in a wide variety of roles including:
- administration
- providing creative and recreational activities for day-care patients
- providing bereavement support and complementary therapies
- driving patients to and from day-care
- visiting and befriending patients and carers in their own homes
- warehouse
- shops
- reception
- kitchen
- gardening and maintenance
- fundraising
