Michael Sobell House

Since 1977, Michael Sobell House has offered a comforting and nurturing space for people to stay, both temporarily to gain support with symptoms, and to experience their last moments if this is their wish.

We offer twelve beds, including two cuddlebeds, for people to come and stay with us both early in an illness and in their last days and weeks of life. As with all our services, our Inpatient unit at Michael Sobell House is inclusive and welcoming and we work hard to ensure that it is safe and comfortable for everyone.

Our specialist multidisciplinary team consists of Doctors, Nurses, Healthcare Assistants, Physiotherapists, Patient and Family Support, Complementary Therapists, and Spiritual Support. We also have close links with local hospitals which provide procedures such as X-Rays, scans, surgical procedures, and chemotherapy, where this is required.

What matters to you matters to us, and we strive to personalise each person’s stay as much as possible – right down to the colour of your duvet!

If you would like to get in touch with our Michael Sobell House Team before you arrive please call 020 8106 9201.

What to expect at our Inpatient Unit

When you first arrive at our Inpatient Unit you will be greeted by one of our nurses, who will show you and anyone with you around the site. You will then be joined by a Doctor and the three of you will work together to develop a care plan shaped around you.

What you might like to bring with you:

  • Favourite toiletries
  • Nightwear
  • Leisurewear or comfortable clothing
  • Well fitting footwear (like slippers or non-slip socks)
  • Mobility aids, e.g., walking stick
  • Phone and charger (free WiFi is available)
  • Something to help you pass the time, like a book or tablet.
  • Special personal items, such as your favourite pillow or important photographs

Medications

Please bring all your regular tablets and medications (including complementary or herbal medications) to show our Doctors.

Meals

We have a spacious and bright café area to sit, chat and enjoy freshly made food. Our chef is dedicated to working with each individual to prepare tasty meals they enjoy, catering to all dietary requirements.

People staying at the House are also welcome to order a takeaway curry or enjoy a pizza and film night with family and friends!

Gardens

Inside Michael Sobell House, our tranquil Japanese-style garden welcomes you as you come through the front doors. Our landscaped garden, maintained by volunteers, is a place where you can relax in a natural environment amongst greenery and listen to the birds.

Smoking and vaping

If you are a smoker or vaper please let the nurses know. We have a designated area outside that you can use. This area is only for patients. We must ask you and your visitors not to smoke or vape in the building due to fire risks.

Visitors

We don’t have any set visiting hours and where possible accommodate people who would like to stay the night with you. Our two cuddlebeds mean you can enjoy precious moments of intimacy and connection with the people close to you.

Your visitors are welcome to eat with you and our chef prepares a daily menu of delicious food available to everyone. There is a small charge for visitor meals and orders must be with our chef by 10.30am.

Your visitors can park in the small free car park at our Michael Sobell Centre next door to our Inpatient Unit. Simply pop into the Centre to pick up an Harlington Hospice parking permit. We cannot always guarantee there will be space in this car park.
