Thank you to Roisin Turner and pupils of St Mary’s School Ascot who took part in a “Walk to Rome” fundraiser for the Hospice last weekend (April 25th & 26th).
Commenting on the walk, Roisin said: “The first weekend of the summer term would usually see the girls at St Mary’s Ascot School enjoying team sports and other fun organised activities together. Instead, from their own homes, the girls & their families took part in a sponsored walk in aid of Michael Sobell Hospice. The challenge was to collectively walk 1,200 miles. This is the distance that the school’s founder, Mary Ward, walked in the 16th century, in order to reach Rome and seek permission from the Pope for her nuns to to care for the sick and also to educate girls. Her walk was hindered for 2 months in Bologna because the Plague was raging there- so there is a certain similarity with Covd19.
“Mindful of Government lockdown advice that only reasonable exercise once a day is permitted from home, the girls and their families logged their daily walks or multiple laps around their gardens! With a target set to raise £1,000, we are delighted to report that so far over £2,800 has been raised & a real sense of community and energy is thriving among the girls as they support a charity that is playing its part in caring for people with this horrible virus and other life limiting conditions.”
