Exclusion Criteria

The following individuals are not eligible for pre‑bereavement or post‑bereavement counselling.

1. Already Engaged in Therapy Elsewhere

We are unable to provide counselling if the patient/client is already engaged with another counsellor or psychotherapist, as dual therapeutic relationships can cause confusion, disrupt progress, and increase safeguarding risk.

For example: Children receiving counselling in school or Adults already in bereavement or mental‑health therapy.

Referrals can be accepted once external therapy has ended. Peer‑support groups are acceptable. For structured therapeutic bereavement groups, referral should be made after the group concludes.

2. Residing Outside the London Borough of Hillingdon

PES primarily supports Hillingdon residents.

Exception: Out‑of‑borough family members receiving support while visiting a patient on the Inpatient Unit (IPU).

3. Experiencing a Mental Health Crisis or Unmanaged Psychiatric Illness

PES are unable to support individuals with acute or unmanaged psychiatric needs (e.g., active psychosis, unmanaged schizophrenia).

Support may be possible where conditions are stable, well‑managed, and appropriate for therapeutic engagement.

Criteria Requiring Team Discussion

Cases meeting the criteria below will be reviewed by the team and the Principal Therapist, with involvement from the Clinical Director where required.

4. Active Addiction or Substance Misuse

Active use may impact safety, emotional stability, and the individual’s ability to engage in therapy. These cases are assessed on a case‑by‑case basis.

5. Risk of Self‑Harm or Suicide

Individuals presenting with self‑harm or suicidal risk may require more specialist services or dual‑agency involvement.

Possible referral pathways include: CAMHS, Social Services, GP or Crisis or community mental‑health services

Referral Process – Additional Safeguarding Statement

Where safeguarding concerns are identified during the referral or assessment process, these will be managed in line with the Hospice Safeguarding Policy.
