Great care is about much more than managing symptoms. It is about understanding what matters most to each individual and helping them continue to enjoy the things that bring them comfort, joy and connection.
Recently, that meant welcoming some rather unusual visitors to the Hospice.
A lifelong passion
One of our patients had always loved reptiles. Over the years, he had cared for and collected a wide variety of snakes, geckos, lizards and other exotic creatures. As his health deteriorated, he was no longer able to keep them, but his passion for reptiles never faded.
During conversations with one of our art therapists, he shared stories about the animals he had owned and how much they had meant to him. Recognising how important this interest remained, we began exploring whether it might be possible to arrange a special reptile-themed experience.
Turning an idea into reality
Initially, we looked into the possibility of visiting a reptile enclosure or specialist venue. However, the only reptile-specific attraction we could identify was located on the Isle of Skye, making the journey impossible given the patient’s condition.
Determined to find another way, the patient’s wife carried out her own research and discovered a local reptile breeder and educator who regularly visits schools to teach children about reptiles. After discussing the idea with the Hospice team, plans quickly began to take shape.
Of course, welcoming reptiles into a hospice is not something we had done before. Our team carefully reviewed policies and procedures to ensure the visit could take place safely and comfortably for everyone involved.

An unforgettable afternoon
On the day of the visit, the educator arrived with a fascinating collection of reptiles, including a snake, several geckos, a chameleon and a Chinese water dragon.
For our patient, it was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with a lifelong passion. He spent time holding the animals, learning more about them and sharing stories from his own experiences over the years.
The excitement quickly spread throughout the Hospice, with many members of staff also taking the opportunity to meet the reptiles. The visit brought smiles, conversation and a real sense of occasion to the day.
Care shaped around the individual
Every person who comes into our care has their own story, interests and wishes. While not every request involves snakes and lizards, this experience perfectly reflects our commitment to person-centred care.
What made this day so special was not simply the reptiles themselves. It was the opportunity for someone to reconnect with an important part of their identity, supported by a team willing to think creatively and a family determined to make it happen.
At Harlington Hospice, we know that meaningful moments can take many forms. Whether it is celebrating a graduation, helping someone return home to their loved ones, or welcoming a Chinese water dragon into the Hospice for the first time, we are proud to support the things that matter most.
Can you help?
Stories like this are only possible because of the generosity of our supporters. Their kindness allows us to provide personalised care and create meaningful experiences for patients and families when they need them most.
